Cleanmgr +

Technology Tips – Published June 2019 in the Guide and Digest

By Don Trauger – Kennett

Cleanmgr + is a new app developed by Mirinsoft (mirinsoft.com) which builds on the venerable Microsoft Disk Cleanup app that was introduced with Windows 98 in 1998. Disk Cleanup and Cleanmgr + are both safe file deletion programs (apps) designed to rid your computer of unneeded files of all types. Microsoft has indicated that they may remove Disk Cleanup in future versions of Windows 10 in favor of Storage Sense. Storage Sense is presently available under Settings > System > Storage. Presently Storage Sense doesn’t do much but Microsoft has said it will be improved to do the things Disk Cleanup does now. We’ll see if that works out.

Meanwhile, Cleanmgr + performs everything that Disk Cleanup does plus it removes many more items. I have found, after cleaning with Cleanmgr + then running CCleaner, that CCleaner had virtually no work to do. CCleaner is another good disk cleanup program and it can still be used to cleanup the Registry.

For now I’m recommending Cleanmgr + for those of you that are familiar with downloading apps from the Internet, creating new folders and customizing programs. Additionally, you need to run Cleanmgr + in administrative mode to allow it to function properly.

To download Cleanmgr + go to: https://www.mirinsoft.com/cleanmgrplus/summary/11-cleanmgr/50-cleanmgr. Create a new folder preferably on the Desktop screen. Right click your Desktop screen, move to New and click Folder. Right click then click Rename to name it something else besides New folder. Open File Explorer and navigate to your Downloads folder and right click Cleanmgr +.zip and then left click Extract All. In the window, click Browse and then navigate to the Desktop and highlight your newly created folder and click Select Folder. Finally click Extract and the files should appear in your folder. Now you are ready to run Cleanmgr +

To run, right click Cleanmgr +.exe and left click Run as administrator. If you see a warning that says “Windows protected this PC” just click More info and click Run anyway. This will open the app. It is safe to ignore the warning.

With the app open you have over 40 choices available for deletion and they are all safe to choose. However, under the Disk Cleanup tab, I highly recommend the following to be unchecked: Windows Components Store, Thumbnails, Recent Documents (If you use that feature in MS Word or LibreOffice), Windows Upgrade Log Files, System Hibernation File and Compress System Installation. Under the + More tab the following should be unchecked: Windows Downloads, Windows Font, Icon and Installer Caches. The app remembers your choices after closing and reopening the app.

Click Preview and it will analyze, without deleting anything, how much can be safely deleted or cleaned up. When you click Cleanup it will then perform the cleanup of your system based on what you have checked or selected.

This app performs what Disk Cleanup and CCleaner do, so you only need to run Cleanmgr + to perform an unneeded file cleanup. Run CCleaner Registry after you run Cleanmgr +.

We will discuss this app at our PC Club meeting on June 18 at 7 PM.

Windows 10 Shortcuts for Settings (Nov 2020)

Technology Tips – Published November 2020 in the Guide and Digest

By Don Trauger – Kennett

Want to see Windows 10 enable or disable your microphone with two clicks? Turn off your webcam? Manage your Wi-Fi settings? Remove unneeded Windows system files using Storage Sense? It’s easy.

Here’s how to make it work:

  1. Right-click any blank place on the Windows 10 Desktop.
  2. Choose New > Shortcut.
  3. Pick one of the ms-settings apps listed below and type it into the input box. (Hint: Copy & Paste it). For example, to open the Storage Sense app, type ms-settings:storagesense in the box marked “Type the location of the item”.
  4. Click Next, give the shortcut a name, like Storage Sense and click Finish.
  5. A new shortcut (Storage Sense) appears on your desktop. Double-click it, and the StorageSense app appears.

Storage Sense is a replacement for the old Windows Disk Cleanup. Use it to clean up unneeded Windows system files. Click to open it, wait until the wheels stop spinning, then click “Temporary files”. Wait until the scan completes then click “Remove files”. Wait until the removal process completes. NOTE: Windows Upgrade/Update files may take quite a while to be removed.

Since Storage Sense only removes unneeded Windows files. You need to complete the cleanup process by installing then running Wise Disk Cleaner and Wise Registry Cleaner. These were written up in the March 2020 issue of the Guide & Digest. Copy & Paste the link below into your browser to read about the Wise apps.

You can ignore the reference to the cleanmgr + program. To finish off the maintenance procedure run “Defragment and Optimize Drives”, which is also mentioned in the above article, to align the disk drive and make your computer run faster. To run it, type defrag in the “Type here to search” field, which is in the lower left corner of the Desktop screen. In the results window click “Open” to start the app.

Windows 10 Version 1903 Disk Cleanup (Dec 2019)

Technology Tips – Published December 2019 in the Guide and Digest

By Don Trauger – Kennett

In June’s 2019 Tech Tips, I wrote about how Microsoft will possibly remove their built-in Disk Cleanup program in Windows 10. I’ve written over the years about how to use it along with CCleaner to clean up your PC. In that article I also included information about a separate program that can replace Disk Cleanup called Cleanmgr +.

You can review it here: http:\\\\www.hersheysmill.org//?s=cleanmgr.

Disk Cleanup doesn’t always run well on Windows 10 so Microsoft has reinvented it and placed an updated version in Settings under System > Storage category.

Directions: Click “Start” click Settings (gear icon above Power icon), click “System” and click “Storage”. At the top click the “Storage Sense” switch to turn it on. Just below click “Storage Sense or run it now”. In first field click the little down arrow at the right and choose to run “Every week”. Under Temporary files put a check mark next to “Delete temporary files that my apps aren’t using”. Next, choose when to delete discarded files from the Recycle bin. One day is a good choice or 14 days if you aren’t sure. The last configuration is to choose when to delete files from the Downloads folder. The Downloads folder will contain apps that you have downloaded and installed. Be cautious with this as you may want reinstall an app that no longer is running correctly. Otherwise, it’s safe to delete files from this folder. Lastly, click the “Clean now” button under “Free up space now” to clean your computer’s disk drive based on the previous settings. Wait for the Done! message and the check mark next to the “Clean now” button. Click the back arrow at the top left corner to return to the previous page.

For a deeper customized cleaning click “Temporary files”. If you don’t see it click “Show more categories”. When you click “Temporary files” it will scan your disk drive looking for other areas to clean. Put a check mark in the categories you want to clean. It’s safe to check everything. However, read the notes under each category. Two areas to be cautious are items that contain the word update or upgrade. If it’s been more than 10 days since you upgraded to version 1903 then it’s safe to delete anything leftover as Windows automatically deletes version upgrade installations after 10 days. Windows updates are a little different. Should a bad update be installed then keeping these files will allow an update to be uninstalled. The alternative is to wait for Microsoft to fix the bad update. Other items in the list are safe to check. After you have made your selections click the “Remove files” button near the top of the page.

The best time to clean up your Windows 10 PC is just after the first Tuesday of the month. This allows time for Microsoft to fix bad updates and get ready for the major updates on the second Tuesday of the month. You can still use CCleaner and Cleanmgr + as these two programs dig even deeper into your system to effect a more thorough cleaning. Remember to optimize/defrag your disk drive after cleaning to speed up your computer. Just type “defrag” (no quotes) in the “Type here to search field” and press the Enter key.

You can use either Cleanmgr + or Storage Sense to remove junk files from your PC. In addition you can still run CCleaner (free version) as it will clean the remote areas of the disk drive the others miss.

We will discuss this topic at the PC Club meeting on Tuesday, December 17 at 7 PM upstairs in the Community Center.
