Cathy Jo Johnson Web Site Notice

Please be aware that we have a new web page in the Pickleball group that may be of interest to anyone who has been locked in for months and starting to think about getting back to sport activities.
Initially we were thinking of publishing some exercises and stretches that folks may want to see but thought better of it realizing that we did not have the expertise or infrastructure to support questions and concerns you may have about them. Instead we contacted a web site owner who runs a site that does “exactly that” so we could “Borrow” a few video’s they have on “Warming-up” and “Stretching”.
Her name is Cathy “Jo” Johnson and her site is: https://www.cjjohnsonglobal.com/  – It is about Fitness for Seniors and playing Pickleball (but fitness will help us all)
  • She wrote a short intro to Hershey Mills Community and shared a few links to her site that you may be interested in.
This page can be reached by the menus at the top of any HM Sports Group Page -and-
also from the main pickleball page !
Hope it helps and hope to see you out there before too long!

Touching Base during Covid-19 Lockup

Hi Fellow Pickleball Player,

We hope this letter finds you and your family healthy as we ride out this pandemic together.

In my opinion, there is no better place to live these days than Hershey’s Mill.  At Granite Farms Estates and Maris Grove, residents have been asked to remain in their condos at all times and meals are left outside their doors. Fortunately, it’s a much different story at Hershey’s Mill. Cherry Blossom and Dogwood Trees were in full bloom during a recent walk along the golf course. A hawk circled overhead as a turtle inched across the golf cart path. How fortunate we are to be blessed by the natural beauty of our surroundings at Hershey’s Mill.

As we sit on the sidelines waiting for pickleball to begin again, here is the latest news, and more, from two of your Committee of Sorts members.

Mary Lou Perry writes: “I’m sure everyone realizes that our pickleball opening day, set for April 25, has to be rescheduled for a later date due to the coronavirus pandemic. As the weather gets nicer, I miss the fun of playing pickleball; but more than that, I miss the social interaction, friendships, and camaraderie which I have come to enjoy, and perhaps even take for granted, with our pickleball group here at Hershey’s Mill. Until we are able to take to the courts once again, I encourage everyone to get outside and walk as much as possible; see friends outdoors at a safe social distance; and pick up the telephone and call your friends!”

And Lynn Mander writes: “So watching the weather improve has been hard knowing that our new pickleball machine is standing by waiting for us. With all this time off, we will make good use of it getting ‘our game on’ when we can play again. Here’s hoping we can keep our first Pickleball Pizza Party scheduled for May 14.”

Well said Mary Lou and Lynn. I’m sure we all agree.

George Madden – another Committee of Sorts member – has reworked the Hershey’s Mill Sports Group portion of the website. It is fantastic – especially the pickleball section. When you have a chance, please visit the HMSG pages of the website starting at the Pickleball page:  https://hersheysmill.org/hmsg-organization/hmsg-pickleball/ where you can find: how to play, tips, lessons, information on our new Pickleball machine and much more.

We only ask you to realize that all dates and other such announcements are on hold until further notice.

We are looking forward to the time when we will all be on the courts together again.
And as Karl Grentz says at the end of his coronavirus updates, “Stay healthy.”

                                                                                    Sincerely,
                                                                                    Your Pickleball “Committee of Sorts”

March 2020 Pickleball Update

Hi Fellow Pickleball Player,

“The Times They Are a-Changin’” sang the iconic singer/songwriter Bob Dylan in 1964. The same can be said for the Hershey’s Mill Pickleball Program in 2020.

A few months ago, we requested a pickleball ball machine from the Master Association. Our request was approved and a top-of-the-line ball machine has been purchased. Funded 50/50 by the Master Association and the HMSG, the ball machine will be an excellent teaching tool at the upcoming clinics which will be held periodically once the season begins (dates to be determined). It will also be instrumental in improving the game of any player who wishes to use it. Stay tuned for dates when instruction on how to operate the machine will take place.

Last Thursday, the Master Association approved a plan to add 4 additional permanent pickleball courts to the area where one tennis court now sits. The 4 new courts will be a mirror-image of the existing permanent 4 courts. We believe the 8 permanent courts will meet the needs of Hershey’s Mill residents now and in the future as more and more players discover the fastest growing sport in the country and in Hershey’s Mill. This world-class facility is being financed by the Master Association (80%) and the HMSG (20%). Construction is expected to begin in late May or early June. When completed, the Hershey’s Mill pickleball courts – in their beautiful God-given setting – will be the finest anywhere and will be enjoyed by many residents year-round for years to come.

A special thanks to John DeVol and the HMSG Board of Supervisors, Ed McFalls, Karl Grentz, the Master Association Board of Directors and the Master Association members for supporting the ball machine and the court expansion. Without their support, neither would have become a reality.

In early May, an interview about the great game of pickleball featuring Lynn Mander and Tom Fant will air on Hershey’s Mill TV. Lynn is an outstanding hostess as well as a terrific and knowledgeable pickleball player. Tom is a man for all seasons: a singer, dancer, scribe, pickleball veteran and “The Father of Winter Pickleball” at Hershey’s Mill. Check the May Guide and Digest for dates and times of the interview.

Friendly reminders:

  • There will be 5 Pickleball Pizza Parties this year, held the second Thursday of each month beginning in May.
  • Pickleball Opening Day will be Saturday, April 25th at 9:30 AM.
  • Open Play continues at 2:00 PM seven days a week through April 30th when it changes to 9:30 AM (advanced players continue to play at 12:30 PM through April 30th when they will begin playing at 1:00 PM).
  • HMSG EXPO 2020 will take place at the Community Center on Friday, May 22nd from 3:00 PM until 5:00 (a “play day” will follow the next day — beginning at 9:30 AM with a talk by Sharon Duffey of SmartBody on injury prevention).

We are excited about the direction of the pickleball program at the Mill. The times are indeed changing.  And we look forward to seeing you on the courts soon.

Your Committee of Sorts
