Bugs 101: Part 2

Last year, John Lisowski, PA Master Naturalist, entertained us with an introduction to the most observed insects in our area. What about the rest? Part 2 promises to be equally informative and enjoyable as he brings some order to our understanding of these small but diverse neighbors or at least.

Nest Box Monitoring Kickoff

You’ve seen them, but did you know that there are over 100 nestboxes in Hershey’s Mill?  Resident volunteers maintain and monitor these boxes—watching the broods of bluebirds, chickadees, and tree swallows as they grow and fledge.  Come learn about results from 2025 and maybe volunteer for 2026.

Life on Mars

Dennis O’Leary

In 1886, Giovanni Schiaparelli discovered “evidence” of intelligent life on Mars. While his “discovery” has been found to be mistaken, Earthlings have been curious about the prospect of Life on Mars ever since. Join HM resident astronomer, Dennis O’Leary to learn about NASA’s efforts to discover past and present forms of life on Mars and what the future holds for Life on Mars.

Spring will arrive and so will this fun opportunity to share experiences and plans with HM neighbors in the Native Plant Garden.  Bring a snack to share and your own chair. BYOB.

Water Quality of Ridley Creek

Lauren McGrath, Director of Watershed Protection at Willistown Conservation Trust, will present the soon-to-be-published results of monitoring water quality in Ridley Creek through 2025.   She will discuss the numbers, causes and potential cures.  Prepare your questions by taking a look at the 2021 report– https://wctrust.org/watershed/

Creating Habitat through Cut Flower Gardening

We will replay a Brandywine Conservancy presentation by Jennie Love, owner of Love ‘n Fresh Flowers, describing the value of incorporating natives into the gardening landscape. She provides a curated list of native plants ideal for garden beauty and for cutting. Hear tips for growing them and learn about the ecological benefits they provide. Share your experiences and suggestions with your gardening neighbors.
