Core Isolation – Memory Integrity (Nov 2022)

Technology Tips – Published November 2022 in the Guide and Digest

Microsoft has implemented this Memory Integrity feature since Version 1803 in Windows 10 and it is standard in Windows 11. Its purpose provides isolation to Windows processes running in memory to guard against malware attacks. Look at it as additional layering protection under your anti-virus program.  A simpler explanation would be when you drive up to one of our access gates you are allowed entry if you have a validated window sticker or access card. Applying the Windows technology, you are treated as potential malware until you are verified by the gate’s security reader. Once in and home, you are isolated from other things going on outside. It’s the same way for other Window’s processes running at the same time.

However, as nice as this sounds, it comes at a cost. A possible significant cost in your computer’s speed. I’ve experienced up to a 30% decrease in boot speed when I do a restart. Windows does have a Fast Startup feature that is on by default which reduces boot time from a power on start.

Since there are many variables involved, you can try this easy test to see if it is worth it to turn off Memory Integrity or to leave it on. On Windows 11, to access it, click Settings, click Privacy & Security, click Windows Security, click Device Security, click Core Isolation Details and turn off Memory Integrity. Windows 10 versions may have a slightly different path. Restart the computer and then try opening several different programs one at a time to see if the response is faster. Try restarting it to see if it boots faster. If you don’t see much change just follow the previous instructions and turn Memory Integrity back on. Wait until it checks your computer then restart it. If you decide it works better with Memory Integrity turned off, you may see a yellow badge on the Windows Security icon on the Taskbar near the clock or click the little up arrow to see it. All that means is that it is notifying you the Memory Integrity is turned off. Go back to Memory Integrity and click Dismiss.

NOTE: To evaluate this test properly, make sure you restart the computer when turning Memory Integrity off or on. Do not shut down the computer as it will invalidate the results.

Fingerprint Reader, Setting up (Oct 2022)

Windows 11 offers several different sign-in options for your computer. Facial recognition and the Fingerprint reader are the two that require specialized hardware. Other sign-in options include the familiar Password, Pin number, Security key and Picture password. Many new computers come configured with a Fingerprint reader. This device speeds up the sign-in process and is the fastest option overall.

My Dell computer has the fingerprint reader embedded in the top of the On-Off button. Very cool, although it took me a while to locate it as it’s an unmarked button.

Set up the Fingerprint reader by right clicking the Start button in the lower left corner of the screen, then click Settings. Click Accounts on the left. Click Sign-in options then click PIN in the center of screen and click Set up. Follow the screen prompts. The PIN is required as a backup to the Fingerprint reader. After your 4 digit PIN number has been entered, click Fingerprint recognition above in the list, then click Set up. Follow the many screen prompts to lift and rest your finger on the Fingerprint reader.

Close any open windows and reboot the computer to test the Fingerprint reader at sign-in. If you encounter a problem, you can still sign in using your PIN number. If the problem continues with the Fingerprint reader you might want to redo the set-up process.

Microsoft Edge – Install Web Sites as Apps (Aug 2022)

Open Microsoft Edge, select a favorite website then click the “…” (Settings) in the top right corner. In the drop-down menu move to “Apps.” Click “Install this site as an App.” In the pop-up window click Install. Next, you’ll see an option to install the current site as an App on your Taskbar, Start menu, Desktop, or Auto-start on Device login. Choose any of the selections then click Allow. Doing so allows the site to launch in its own window without the usual menu clutter. This Edge feature can change how you can use the Web. It allows you to quickly access your important or favorite sites without first opening Edge and clicking on your desired site in a large list of Bookmarks. While Chrome offers a similar capability, Edge turns web apps into a featured attraction, with a single menu for seeing what you’ve installed.

Virtual Private Networks – VPN’s (July 2022)

You may have seen a TV ad for NordVPN and wondered what it is all about. What is a VPN and do I really need another computer add-on? Doesn’t my antivirus protect me against all kinds of malware?

First, a VPN service safeguards your identity, location, and activities online. It performs this operation by encrypting your Internet connection between your computer and your website destination. When you connect to your desired website your Internet connection is decrypted so you can view the website normally. With a VPN, you connect to a private server first, which scrambles your data and makes it far more difficult for third parties to track what you are doing online. A VPN is incredibly useful for increasing security when you use a public Internet service at an airport or a hotel where the Internet service is provided to all including hackers. It is highly recommended when using a banking website. I recommend you consider including a VPN for added security.

An anti-virus program can only manage unwanted intrusions coming into or leaving your computer. It cannot control or protect you once your data has left your computer or on its journey back from a website. A VPN protects you both ways on the Internet journey.

VPN’s carry a typical monthly charge between $4 and $10 a month. However, top line anti-virus programs may include a VPN free of additional charges. I have Bitdefender Total Security anti-virus and they include a free VPN app. Setup was quite simple. Overall, I have been satisfied with its performance so I can recommend both Bitdefender anti-virus and its VPN app.

However, not all was perfect. VPN’s have a downside, not in regard to security, but in connection speed. This can complicate an Internet connection if your home’s wireless signal (WiFi) strength is weak. A computer that is wired to the Verizon router should be able to manage a wired connection with no problems. If you want to check your home’s WiFi speed, download the free Ookla speed test app for Windows at: Speedtest for Windows: Internet speed test for Windows. A MAC version is also available at: Speedtest for Mac: Internet speed test for MacOS

Verizon’s top available speeds are 150 Mbps for both upload and download speeds. I have experienced a 50% decline in speed to around 75 Mbps when using VPN. This decline will not affect any operational conditions including watching streaming video. However, if your basic Verizon speed is less than 75 Mbps, it could affect streaming video along with a temporary VPN speed reduction. Normal website viewing should be fine. A long distance from the router to your computer is the prime factor in reduced Verizon speeds because maintaining connection stability comes first. That requires the Verizon router to reduce connection speed. On the plus side, using Bitdefender’s VPN, normal speeds are achieved better than 90% of the time. The VPN speed reduction is normal for all VPN’s and comes from high use by other users.

You can separately add a VPN app to your computer. NordVPN and ExpressVPN are two recommended ones. Just Google “Review VPNs.”
