SKEDDA Scheduling Software

SKEDDA pronounced /sked-dah/

is a web based software system used by Hershey’s Mill for scheduling court time. Being web based means that you can schedule future playing time from any browser on any device you have. Court time can be scheduled for the following Sports:

  • Billiards
  • Bocce
  • Horseshoes
  • Pickleball
  • Platform Tennis
  • Shuffleboard
  • Table Tennis
  • Tennis

These 8 Sports (see left column) record their Open Play times and other planned events in SKEDDA for all to see. This allows you to see the remaining available time slots that you can use for your personal reservation.

Since we live in an active community, we need to have some guidelines on the utilization of reservations.  Please obey these rules out of respect for your fellow sport enthusiast.

  • If you make a reservation and decide not to use it, go back into SKEDDA and delete it ASAP so other players can use that time slot.
  • Maximum time for each reservation is set by the particular Sports leaders. Any deviation you would like must be taken up with the appropriate sport leadership.
  • Any system type issues, questions or other concerns that you have making a reservation, please bring to our attention using the form at the bottom of this page.

Skedda Sports Courts Reservation Rules

  1. Open Play allows anyone to come to the courts to play, knowing there will be other residents there to play with.  If more than four people arrive for Open Play then players will be rotated onto the court, in a fair manner, to play on a first come first serve basis.
    • Open Play can be pre booked for the entire season.
    • Open Play must not use all courts but allow for at least two free courts for others, on the Tennis Courts, and at least one free court elsewhere for those not interested in Open Play.
    • Open Play creates a social atmosphere. It is generally a more structured time organized by the Sports leader. We want to encourage Open Play without excluding others who just want to play by themselves.
  2. Court reservations can be made up to two weeks in advance, for one day at a time.
  3. One court per day can be reserved under one name.
  4. Any allocation of time up to two hours can be reserved.
  5. A reservation can be made for any time.  There are no preset time slots.
  6. Use of the ball machines should be booked through Skedda for whatever time allocation up to two hours per day.
  7. Under the honor system, we expect players who are not going to be using their court to cancel their reservation so that others may use the court.
  8. If more than one group shows up for a court time, the Skedda reservation will be honored and those who have not booked in advance should leave.
  9. Violations by any individual will result in revoked scheduling privileges.
  10. Policies are subject to change.

It is important to realize that any resident can use any of the Sports facilities whether or not they have registered for HMSG and/or one or more Sports.

In other words, simply stopping down and using a sports facility is fine if it has not already been scheduled by anyone.

To ensure that you don’t run into conflicts, it makes sense to simply schedule the resource that you would like to utilize ahead of time.

[In such a case, the group who made the reservation would have the right to the court]

We Use SKEDDA to maintain our reservations!

  1. You do need to do a “1” time request of SKEDDA Access if you plan on using it to schedule time for one of the Sports facilities.
  2. With or Without SKEDDA access, anyone may view the schedule by clicking on the link.

If you would like to stay informed of HMSG plans and events, make sure you join HMSG if you have not already done so. You will be added to that mailing list.

Likewise, if you want to know what’s going on in particular sport, let them know so they can add you to their unique mailing list.

If you have already followed the “Request SKEDDA Access” procedure and have your Userid & Password, click on the image to the right to view and/or schedule reservations.

  • Doing so without your Userid & Password will only let you view existing reservations.

Operating Instructions

Control Panel

Please follow below in the order of the buttons/Dials as shown above.

  1. POWER – Pushing to the “ON” position begins a start-time delay period of 10 seconds before pickleballs are thrown.
  2. Elevation – Push button UP or DOWN to adjust trajectory of shots. This will likely take some practice.
  3. OSCILLATOR – If you wish to have balls shoot directly where pointed, make sure toggle is level (off). To have balls go back and forth to two alternating spots, set toggle to 2-Line. To have machine toss balls in a sweeping motion across the court, set to Random.
  4. There is NO remote button.
  5. RESET – If the Pickleball machine shuts off while balls are still loaded in the hopper, turn the power switch OFF. Remove all balls and see if a ball is jammed in the hopper or between/under one of the throwing wheels. Remove the ball and turn power switch on.If machine does not power on, the Reset button may have tripped. In that case, turn machine off and push reset button until it locks in place. Turn the machine on again and test.==> If the machine shuts off again or does not power up, contact a Pickleball COS member and put machine in shed & Cover.
  6. Ignore Charge (used only in battery units)
  7. SPIN – Use this Dial to have balls bounce Flat or have it produce Backspin or Topspin (each up to 4 levels of difficulty)
  8. INTERVAL – How much time do you want in between thrown balls? Turning clockwise increases the frequency of balls thrown (approx. from 1 ball every 10 seconds to 1 ball every second). Again, you will need to experiment for what is right for you.
  9. SPEED – Please start at low setting and adjust. Turning clockwise increases the speed at which balls are thrown. Caution: It claims that its highest setting can throw at 60 miles an hour.

History of Platform Tennis

In the fall of 1928, Scarsdale, NY neighbors James (Jimmy) Cogswell and Fessenden (Fess) Blanchard were on a hunt for an outdoors winter racquet sport close to home. They built a small, wooden raised court and bought a set of wooden paddles and spongy balls at a local store.

When they got tired of pulling balls out of snowbanks, they put up chicken wire fencing. After some debate, the men agreed that playing the ball off the screens added dimension to the game and broadened the skill set necessary for the sport.

This led them to build a multi-purpose wooden platform on a small strip of land on Cogswell’s property for deck tennis. The size and shape of that strip of land had a significant effect on the whole future of Platform Paddle Tennis.

The reason points last so long is because the ball is hit soft, placed strategically. Hitting with power keeps the ball in play, since when it comes off the wires it is still in play.

2023 Bocce Championship is in the books!

Great Memorial Day - 2023

Bocce is a very popular activity here at the Mill. The sport continues to attract residents both young and old as it is a sport for everyone. We have two courts which are available 24 hours seven days a week. A number of programs are available to the residents allowing them to choose the one that best fits their life style. It is a great way to get together in a casual setting and develop friendships with your new neighbors. We provide Bocce clinics for all residents allowing them the opportunity to see if it is something they would enjoy.

Please make sure that you look for the expanded Bocce article in the April edition of the Guide which contains all the details on the upcoming season.

How to Schedule Court time

It is important to realize that any resident can use any of the Sports facilities whether or not they have registered for HMSG and/or one or more Sports groups.

Likewise, if you want to know what’s going on in particular sport groups, let them know so they can add you to their unique mailing list.

The Courts

Our Pickleball Players

Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton and ping pong, and is played on a badminton-sized court using a ball similar to a wiffle ball. Pickleball has swept the nation in recent years across all age categories. Seniors are no exception finding out that pickleball is great exercise and easy to learn. Smaller courts make it a social game and are less stressful on the body than tennis and other racket games.

Who is playing this sport? You guessed it: the group that seems to have become regular players are baby boomers. The seniors have been attracted to the sport because it is easy to play, very social and less stressful on the body. Some are even current and former tennis players who for physical reasons can no longer play that game. Many non-racket sport players have also joined the pickleballers.

Try it – you might like it.

Here at Hershey’s Mill the predominant focus is on having fun. We have 8 great outside courts and a very welcoming group of players.

  1. Residents can schedule a court and play private games with whomever they want at any competitive level in which they are comfortable.
  2. Most of our players use our daily OPEN “scheduled time” to come out: socialize and play recreational type games still managing to get games of relatively competitive skill levels. At times, some of our more experienced players will “pay it forward” for a game or two by playing out of thier skill level (always appreciated).

On the right shows where we had some ringers join us on the courts…

Trying to improve your game (regardless of your current level)?

Getting Stretched Out for Spring Pickleball

Social Pickleball: A non-competitive round robin format. For players looking for a fun, comfortable and social type of play. Players are able to move around the court safely and play with others of the same level and competitive or non-competitive spirit.

We continue to receive many great comments regarding our welcoming and friendly atmosphere.

Open Play creates a social atmosphere. It is a more structured time organized by the Sports leader. We encourage Open Play without excluding others who just want to play private games. Open Play hours are adjusted by seasons so that we can take advantage of temperature norms. Please see poster image below!
