Update on BOCCE 2020 League

NOTE: 6/8/2020 – As with all other information published in this current Pandemic, please be aware that while our intention is to keep everyone up to date while planning for better times, it must be understood that everything will be subject to the ongoing and changing Pandemic status. Keep up-to-date on the pandemic status by monitoring your inbox for updates from the Master Association and Karl Grentz.

The Sports Group has given us permission to start the 2020 Bocce League.  We plan to start playing on Sunday July 5th.  This will most likely be an abbreviated league season ending around Labor Day. Groupings will probably be set up so that teams will  play 5 or 6 matches, versus the normal 8.

IMPORTANT—we are implementing a  3 week signup period  ending June 15th (firm).  We will then need 3 weeks administrative time to organize the league and communicate the details to the league participants. At that time, we will also communicate any information we have on hot dog nights, open bocce, the playoffs and the very popular end-of-year social.

Teams consist of 2 players.  To register a team for the league, e-mail Joe Carrone at trejoe2@gmail.comYou must include names of both players, as well as their email addresses and preferred phone numbers

Note – if you played in 2018, you will still need to re-register. Because of the compressed timeframe, please make sure you forward the entire set of information—so we don’t have to e-mail you back and delay the process.

CPR/AED/ Choking Certification

Hershey's Mill Sports Group

BY Barbara Trimble-Ashton

“The American Heart Association and some hospitals are pushing to make lifesaving techniques easier and more convenient to learn. Choking kills about 5,000 Americans annually, while about 450,000 Americans die of cardiac arrest, mostly at home, work or in public rather than at a hospital. For both types of emergency, bystander help can be the difference between life and death.”

Hershey’s Mill Sports Group has been providing CPR/AED/Choking classes for several years at reduced rates to residents of Hershey’s Mill  and we are introducing another class  sometime in the late Summer or Fall.

What is CPR? Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a life-saving technique that helps maintain blood flow to the brain and heart in an emergency situation. It is a combination of chest compressions (pushing up and down on the chest) and rescue breaths. You are basically taking over the role of the heart and lungs by pumping blood and oxygen into the body.

Why is CPR important? It can save your life, your children’s lives, your partner’s life or, a stranger’s life. Getting trained is easily accessible to anyone who wants it and not hard to complete.

Choking occurs when a foreign object lodges in the throat or windpipe blocking the flow of oxygen to the brain.

Have you ever been in a restaurant and witnessed someone choking and wondered how you could help them?

According to Injury Facts 2017, choking is the fourth leading cause of unintentional injury death. Of the 5,051 people who died from choking in 2015, 2,848 were older than 74.

Food is often responsible for choking incidents in the elderly. Sobering information isn’t it?

Why is training for a choking emergency important? It is a lifesaving technique for your family, friends or a stranger and easy to learn.

What is an AED and what does it stand for?  Automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the life threatening heartbeat (or lack of) and can, by application of electricity, correct it.

This sounds a bit complicated doesn’t it? Actually, it is quite simple and the training we provide will enable you to use it with ease.

If you are in a public facility, airport, train/bus station you will see the sign for an AED posted for public or staff awareness. Using this device is an integral component of CPR.

In summary, CPR training, Choking intervention and use of the AED are all important life-saving skills that you can easily master.

Touching Base during Covid-19 Lockup

Hi Fellow Pickleball Player,

We hope this letter finds you and your family healthy as we ride out this pandemic together.

In my opinion, there is no better place to live these days than Hershey’s Mill.  At Granite Farms Estates and Maris Grove, residents have been asked to remain in their condos at all times and meals are left outside their doors. Fortunately, it’s a much different story at Hershey’s Mill. Cherry Blossom and Dogwood Trees were in full bloom during a recent walk along the golf course. A hawk circled overhead as a turtle inched across the golf cart path. How fortunate we are to be blessed by the natural beauty of our surroundings at Hershey’s Mill.

As we sit on the sidelines waiting for pickleball to begin again, here is the latest news, and more, from two of your Committee of Sorts members.

Mary Lou Perry writes: “I’m sure everyone realizes that our pickleball opening day, set for April 25, has to be rescheduled for a later date due to the coronavirus pandemic. As the weather gets nicer, I miss the fun of playing pickleball; but more than that, I miss the social interaction, friendships, and camaraderie which I have come to enjoy, and perhaps even take for granted, with our pickleball group here at Hershey’s Mill. Until we are able to take to the courts once again, I encourage everyone to get outside and walk as much as possible; see friends outdoors at a safe social distance; and pick up the telephone and call your friends!”

And Lynn Mander writes: “So watching the weather improve has been hard knowing that our new pickleball machine is standing by waiting for us. With all this time off, we will make good use of it getting ‘our game on’ when we can play again. Here’s hoping we can keep our first Pickleball Pizza Party scheduled for May 14.”

Well said Mary Lou and Lynn. I’m sure we all agree.

George Madden – another Committee of Sorts member – has reworked the Hershey’s Mill Sports Group portion of the website. It is fantastic – especially the pickleball section. When you have a chance, please visit the HMSG pages of the website starting at the Pickleball page:  https://hersheysmill.org/hmsg-organization/hmsg-pickleball/ where you can find: how to play, tips, lessons, information on our new Pickleball machine and much more.

We only ask you to realize that all dates and other such announcements are on hold until further notice.

We are looking forward to the time when we will all be on the courts together again.
And as Karl Grentz says at the end of his coronavirus updates, “Stay healthy.”

                                                                                    Sincerely,
                                                                                    Your Pickleball “Committee of Sorts”

Hershey’s Mill Sports Closed

As you know by now, all Hershey’s Mill Sports are shut-down until further notice!

Just to make sure that we are all on the same page, please be aware that any opening dates, event dates etc. in existing posts on this site were planned prior to the Pandemic we are currently experiencing.

Emails will be sent out as soon as these rules can be relaxed as the safety of everyone is our highest priority. Only then will we determine what can be salvaged and given new dates.

Senior Men’s League (also published in April Digest)

SENIOR MEN’S LEAGUE by Sergei Yurchak, Springton.

Fairly soon the weather will be improving to allow for playing outdoor tennis.

This will give you an opportunity to participate, with other Hershey’s Mill players, in the interclub Senior Men’s League.

An objective of the League is to provide competitive doubles matches for the players, typically five teams per match and ten matches per season.

If you are interested in playing in this venue come May, please contact me at syurchak@comcast.net.
