  • Don Evons will be returning in May to assist anyone who steps forward to restart a program.
  • See our web site for details beyond the 1:00 Saturday play. It is spectacular!
  • Memorial Day Celebration will feature a rejuvenated horseshoe program.

Bowling (also published in April Digest)

Bowling by Ed and Eileen Isselmann – Invernes.

By the time you read this, the 2019 – 2020 Bowling Season will have ended.

Although we cannot post final results yet, we can guarantee everyone had a good time.

Additionally, we look forward to meeting new potential bowlers at the Sports Expo in May. Keep an eye out for this exciting event that showcases all of the sporting groups active at Hershey’s Mill.

At the Expo we will be giving out information  and taking registrations for both fulltime and substitute positions for the 2020 – 2021 season.

Thanks to everyone who helped to make this the successful season that it was!

Bocce (also published in April Digest)

BOCCE 2020 Season – by Joe Carrone

It is finally spring and we are ready to kick off the 2020 Bocce season. After a year’s absence, the very popular summer bocce league will return. In 2018, more than 120 residents participated (60 two-person teams). We hope to even increase that number in 2020. Teams will be divided into groups of 8 and each team will play the other teams in their group once (so your commitment is roughly 7 hours over the course of 3 months). The season will start right after Memorial Day and last until September. There are no fixed times to play – you simply contact your opponents, arrange a suitable time and reserve a court. Signups for the league begin April 1st, and end on May 15th. The bocce committee will then set up the groups — so make sure you enroll in time, and don’t be late or you might miss out. To register a team for the league, e-mail Joe Carrone at trejoe2@gmail.com. You must include names of both players, as well as their email addresses and phone numbers. Note – if you played in 2018, you will still need to re-register.

At the end of the regular season, eight teams will compete in the playoffs, culminating in a championship match combined with a fun social gathering.

  • For those of you new to the sport, we will be having 2 hands-on bocce clinics – Tuesday April 14th and Thursday April 16th  – both starting at 3pm. These clinics will introduce you to the sport, and help you decide if you want to join the league. There are no signups for the clinic – just show up for one or both.
  • For those of you who might not want to play in a league, there will be scheduled weekly open bocce. There are no signups — just show up at the day and time (to be announced), and play with others who have joined you.
  • We also plan to bring back the ever-popular hot dog nights — probably 3 or 4 over the course of the summer. These are sign-up events and limited to the first 20 players who sign the list for that month.
  • Last, but not least, are the village bocce social nights. Several villages have regularly scheduled these over the past years, usually involving food and drinks. Typically, villages will pre-reserve the courts in late spring for several nights during the summer season. Contact Carrol Thompson at carroll.thompson59@gmail.com for further details.
  • The updated bocce mailing list is being created. If you sign up as a league team, you will automatically be added. If you are not joining the league, but want to get all the updated information, email Joe and let him know.

There are only 2 rules for the great sport of bocce at Hershey’s Mill – meet your neighbors and have fun!!!!!

March 2020 Pickleball Update

Hi Fellow Pickleball Player,

“The Times They Are a-Changin’” sang the iconic singer/songwriter Bob Dylan in 1964. The same can be said for the Hershey’s Mill Pickleball Program in 2020.

A few months ago, we requested a pickleball ball machine from the Master Association. Our request was approved and a top-of-the-line ball machine has been purchased. Funded 50/50 by the Master Association and the HMSG, the ball machine will be an excellent teaching tool at the upcoming clinics which will be held periodically once the season begins (dates to be determined). It will also be instrumental in improving the game of any player who wishes to use it. Stay tuned for dates when instruction on how to operate the machine will take place.

Last Thursday, the Master Association approved a plan to add 4 additional permanent pickleball courts to the area where one tennis court now sits. The 4 new courts will be a mirror-image of the existing permanent 4 courts. We believe the 8 permanent courts will meet the needs of Hershey’s Mill residents now and in the future as more and more players discover the fastest growing sport in the country and in Hershey’s Mill. This world-class facility is being financed by the Master Association (80%) and the HMSG (20%). Construction is expected to begin in late May or early June. When completed, the Hershey’s Mill pickleball courts – in their beautiful God-given setting – will be the finest anywhere and will be enjoyed by many residents year-round for years to come.

A special thanks to John DeVol and the HMSG Board of Supervisors, Ed McFalls, Karl Grentz, the Master Association Board of Directors and the Master Association members for supporting the ball machine and the court expansion. Without their support, neither would have become a reality.

In early May, an interview about the great game of pickleball featuring Lynn Mander and Tom Fant will air on Hershey’s Mill TV. Lynn is an outstanding hostess as well as a terrific and knowledgeable pickleball player. Tom is a man for all seasons: a singer, dancer, scribe, pickleball veteran and “The Father of Winter Pickleball” at Hershey’s Mill. Check the May Guide and Digest for dates and times of the interview.

Friendly reminders:

  • There will be 5 Pickleball Pizza Parties this year, held the second Thursday of each month beginning in May.
  • Pickleball Opening Day will be Saturday, April 25th at 9:30 AM.
  • Open Play continues at 2:00 PM seven days a week through April 30th when it changes to 9:30 AM (advanced players continue to play at 12:30 PM through April 30th when they will begin playing at 1:00 PM).
  • HMSG EXPO 2020 will take place at the Community Center on Friday, May 22nd from 3:00 PM until 5:00 (a “play day” will follow the next day — beginning at 9:30 AM with a talk by Sharon Duffey of SmartBody on injury prevention).

We are excited about the direction of the pickleball program at the Mill. The times are indeed changing.  And we look forward to seeing you on the courts soon.

HMSG-Special-CPR

Welcome to the Heart of our Sports Group

Medical-CPR

Keeping the blood flow active, even partially extends the opportunity for a successful resuscitation
once trained
medical staff
arrive on site.

CPR (CardioPulmonary Resuscitation) falls under the umbrella of HMSG organization and is directed by an active member of the Hershey’s Mill sports scene.

Barbara Trimble, RN, BS, MBA

  • Barbara’s role is to coordinate the CPR/AED/Choking classes for residents of Hershey’s Mill and believes that everyone should learn the basics for CPR/AED and Choking.

You may have read the following paper written by Barbara and published in the Guide on “why EVERYONE SHOULD know CPR”

Given the knowledge it provides in Life Saving events, it will remain here for your consumption.

CPR/AED/ Choking Certification

“The American Heart Association and some hospitals are pushing to make lifesaving techniques easier and more convenient to learn. Choking kills about 5,000 Americans annually, while about 450,000 Americans die of cardiac arrest, mostly at home, work or in public rather than at a hospital. For both types of emergency, bystander help can be the difference between life and death.”

Hershey’s Mill Sports Group has been providing CPR/AED/Choking classes for several years at reduced rates to residents of Hershey’s Mill and we will continue to do so. Classes are normally held at the Community Centre.

  1. What is CPR? Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a life-saving technique that helps maintain blood flow to the brain and heart in an emergency situation. It is a combination of chest compressions (pushing up and down on the chest) and rescue breaths. You are basically taking over the role of the heart and lungs by pumping blood and oxygen into the body.
  2. Why is CPR important? It can save your life, your children’s lives, your partner’s life or, a stranger’s life. Getting trained is easily accessible to anyone who wants it and is not hard to complete.
  3. Choking occurs when a foreign object lodges in the throat or windpipe blocking the flow of oxygen to the brain. Have you ever been in a restaurant and witnessed someone choking and wondered how you could help them?

According to Injury Facts 2017, choking is the fourth leading cause of unintentional injury death. Of the 5,051 people who died from choking in 2015, 2,848 were older than 74. Food is often responsible for choking incidents in the elderly. Sobering information isn’t it?

Why is training for a choking emergency important? It is a lifesaving technique for your family, friends or a stranger and easy to learn.

What is an AED and what does it stand for?  Automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the life threatening heartbeat (or lack of) and can, by application of electricity, correct it.

This sounds a bit complicated doesn’t it? Actually, it is quite simple and the training we provide will enable you to use it with ease.

If you are in a public facility, airport, train/bus station you will see the sign for an AED posted for public or staff awareness. Using this device is an integral component of CPR.

CPR training, Choking intervention and use of the AED are all important life-saving skills that you can easily master.
