HMSG-Horseshoes

Welcome to our HorseShoes Group

Horseshoes

Horseshoes

Whether it be horseshoes or quoits, everyone has tossed one at some time in their life. A horseshoe is exactly what it says and a quoit is a closed circle. The Horseshoes stake is approximately 12 inches high. The quoit stake is only high enough to fit four quoits on top of each other (3 “+/-).

How to Schedule Court time

It is important to realize that any resident can use any of the Sports facilities whether or not they have registered for HMSG and/or one or more Sports groups.

In other words, simply stopping down and using a sports facility is fine if it has not already been scheduled by anyone.

To ensure that you don’t run into conflicts, it makes sense to simply schedule the resource that you would like to utilize ahead of time.

[In such a case, the group who made the reservation would have the right to the court]

We Use SKEDDA to maintain our reservations!

  1. You do need to do a “1” time request of SKEDDA Access if you plan on using it to schedule time for one of the Sports facilities.

HMSG-Cycling

Welcome to our Bike Club

Bike Club

This is a group of about 50 bicycle enthusiasts who enjoys both the outdoors and the camaraderie that can develop between riders on any given  trip and certainly over the riding months.

We have rides for both Leisure Riders and Trail Riders

Biking is organized at the Mill through The Hershey’s Mill Bike Club. It is for riders of all levels who enjoy cycling on the many scenic trails and country roads in southeastern Pennsylvania.

Since 2019, thanks to Jeff’s research and scheduling we added a variety of trail rides.  We have tried to structure our rides for the “Leisure riders” and “Trail Riders”.  Many of our rides allow Trail Riders with extensions so that they can have a longer workout.  Leisure riders can stay within their comfort zone in mileage and speed.  We now also have several riders with “electric assisted bikes”.

More riders means more fun more options.

Do you know someone not on our list that rides and may want to hear about our group?

Do you know experienced bikers willing to be co-leaders in our rides?

If so, please have them use the contact form below and we will follow up with them.

Alternatively, if you get their permission for us to call, simply provide us their contact information.

Welcome to our Bowling League

Bowling

The Latest News Here!

The HM Tuesday Bowling League is one of the fastest growing sports activities in Hershey’s Mill and the most fun.

A number of our bowlers head south for the winter and we have openings for regulars and subs for the Spring Season which runs…

January 2nd to April 2nd, 2024

We bowl every Tuesday morning from 9:45 to 12 at Palace Lanes in Downingtown. Teams are being formed now so don’t miss out on this fun opportunity!

Contact Betsy Towell at: towellelizabeth@yahoo.com by December 22, 2023

How it Works....

The Hershey Mill Bowling League runs from mid Oct to end of March. It is divided into 2 halves.

  • The fall session runs from October to end of December. We then declare Winners for the Session.

  • The winter session runs from January to end of March. We then declare Winners for the Session.

The reason for two halves is that most people bowl Oct to March. Perhaps 10-20 bowlers only bowl in the fall session (as many go off to warmer climates) when it gets cold. We then recruit people to fill the empty spots for the winter session, reset the teams and typically wind up with 80 bowlers per session. When we add in the Sub count, we have 125 bowlers in total.

The HM Tuesday Mixed Bowling League is the best way to get exercise during the winter months, meet some wonderful people and create lifetime friendships.

Keep an eye out for sign-up notices which will start in August, 2023. Hope to see your name as a regular or a substitute.

Have a great summer.

Welcome to our Pickleball Instruction area!

Pickleball Instruction

It is generally agreed that Pickleball gives you a good aerobic workout without as much stress and strain on joints and muscles.

The senior age group has been attracted to the sport because it is easy to play, very social and less stressful on muscles, tendons and joints.

Given we have a pickleball distribution list of almost 250 players in our very active community, it has certainly taken hold here at Hershey’s Mill.

Staying safe so you can continue to play is first and foremost.

Sharon Duffey PT, FCP offers us some tips for the Pickleball courts.

Not a Problem ! Come on out at any Open pickleball and let us know so we can get you started. When the need arises, we also have volunteer instructors that will hold classes and get you started.

  • We now have the Pickleball Tutor machine that both beginner and intermediate players can use to improve.

In the meantime, see below for some real good beginner videos as well as some drills for our Pickleball tutor machine

Been playing for awhile ?

If you are like most of us, you have been playing for awhile and whether winning or losing games on any given day, its the social aspect we enjoy the most. But it is also likely that we can all name at least a few aspects of our game that we would like to improve upon.

  • The videos below have just those types of tips and instruction.
  • Be sure to watch Tutor Plus machine video above

This list of videos will be added to over time.

Our Pickleball Players

Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton and ping pong, and is played on a badminton-sized court using a ball similar to a wiffle ball. Pickleball has swept the nation in recent years across all age categories. Seniors are no exception finding out that pickleball is great exercise and easy to learn. Smaller courts make it a social game and are less stressful on the body than tennis and other racket games.

Who is playing this sport? You guessed it: the group that seems to have become regular players are baby boomers. The seniors have been attracted to the sport because it is easy to play, very social and less stressful on the body. Some are even current and former tennis players who for physical reasons can no longer play that game. Many non-racket sport players have also joined the pickleballers.

Try it – you might like it.

Here at Hershey’s Mill the predominant focus is on having fun. We have 8 great outside courts and a very welcoming group of players.

  1. Residents can schedule a court and play private games with whomever they want at any competitive level in which they are comfortable.
  2. Most of our players use our daily OPEN “scheduled time” to come out: socialize and play recreational type games still managing to get games of relatively competitive skill levels. At times, some of our more experienced players will “pay it forward” for a game or two by playing out of thier skill level (always appreciated).

Getting Stretched Out for Spring Pickleball

Social Pickleball: A non-competitive round robin format. For players looking for a fun, comfortable and social type of play. Players are able to move around the court safely and play with others of the same level and competitive or non-competitive spirit.

We continue to receive many great comments regarding our welcoming and friendly atmosphere.

Open Play creates a social atmosphere. It is a more structured time organized by the Sports leader. We encourage Open Play without excluding others who just want to play private games. Open Play hours are adjusted by seasons so that we can take advantage of temperature norms. Please see poster image below!
