Gates and Visitor Information

Hershey’s Mill is a gated community.

There are four gates for entry into Hershey’s Mill. Visitors (without Hershey Mill’s entry cards) can use only the Main and North Gates for entry. Both of these gates are on Greenhill Rd. The additional gates can be used for entry only by those with Hershey Mill’s entry devices.

Hershey’s Mill residents should call the Main Gate Security Center to provide authorization for expected guests not already registered. Failure to provide Security with guest authorization WILL RESULT IN THE GUEST BEING DENIED ENTRY INTO HERSHEY’S MILL, should the resident be unavailable.

GUEST ENTRY LANE CALL BOXES & PROCEDURES

Hershey’s Mill Security has installed new guest call boxes at the North and Main Gate guest entrance lanes on Greenhill Road.

The Security Department has been running into an increasing number of guests who (1) don’t know the house address they are visiting, (2) attempt to gain entry into Hershey’s Mill by simply pulling up to a gate, and (3) believe that using their cell phone to call a resident will give them access to Hershey’s Mill.

Residents, because they are the first point of contact with their guests, play a critical role in ensuring that guest entry runs smoothly; and it is important that they relay to their guests the basic instructions on entering their gated community. When these instructions are not offered, it can back traffic up at various gates and lengthen the amount of time it takes for a guest to be able to enter Hershey’s Mill. This can lead to the guest, and the people in line behind them, to become confused and frustrated.

Below are the three means of guest entry, and the resident’s role in each:

1. GUEST GATE PHONE BOXES:

The primary, and easiest means by which a resident’s guest can gain entry into Hershey’s Mill is by using the guest phone boxes located at the North and Main Gate entrances.

Your GUEST must:

  1. Use the guest phone box keypad to enter the house (address) number of the resident they are visiting.
  • They do not need to press any buttons other than the numbers necessary to enter the house number. Unlike previous entry phones utilized by Hershey’s Mill, there is no longer a requirement to put zeros before an address number. (i.e. a guest visiting house number 91 would enter only “91” on the keypad.)
  1. WAIT – The guest phone box will dial the resident automatically.

YOU must:

  1. Verify that the guest is calling you from a guest phone box, rather than a cell phone, as the gate will only open when receiving a command from the guest phone box.
  • Your caller ID will show 610-436-0549 or 610-701-6389 for calls placed from a guest phone box.
  • You will not be able to open the gate for any guest calling you from a cellular phone, rather than the guest phone box.
  1. Press “9” on YOUR phone to open the gate.

Please note that, during a power outage affecting the North Gate (Greenhill Road) area, the North Gate guest phone box will be inoperable; and all guests should be directed to come to the Main Gate.

2. GUEST LIST:

The file for each Hershey’s Mill residence contains a guest list; and this list, which can be edited by the resident, contains the names of companies and individuals who the resident has elected to allow into Hershey’s Mill to visit them at any time, or for a specific period of time. If expecting a visit from a guest who is on their guest list, the resident should:

  1. Make their guest aware that they should still attempt to use the guest call box to reach the resident, unless the resident will be away from home.
  2. Inform the guest they will need to present Photo ID.

3. DAILY ADMITTANCE LIST:

If a resident is expecting a guest, who is not currently on their Guest List (described above), to arrive in the next couple of days; but they are concerned they will miss the guest’s call from the guest call box, then they can call the Security Center at 610-436-6403 to have their guest’s name recorded on the daily admittance list.

If calling ahead to add a guest’s name to the daily admittance list, the resident should:

  1. Call Security no more than a day or two in advance of their guest’s arrival.
  2. Be prepared to provide Security with their 4-digit ID number (the number the resident chose and wrote on their Resident Information form).
    1. If you do not know this number, you should stop by the Security Center to look it up….or change it to something easy to remember.
  3. Inform their guest that they have been placed on the daily admittance list.
  4. Inform their guest that they may be asked to provide Photo ID.

If you have any questions regarding the operation of the new guest call boxes, please feel free to contact the Security Department at 610-436-6403.

Windows 8.1 and Your Privacy

by Don Trauger – Kennett

I’ve just read about Amazon’s new Fire phone. A reporter describes it “as the most effective device ever sold to harvest the owner’s personal data”. The phone uses its camera and microphone to collect your data then uploads it to Amazon’s servers. Then it returns the results to you. This happens when you press a button on the phone that activates the camera and microphone and at the same time it sends your GPS location. If you use the built-in web browser in the phone your privacy is compromised even further. One good thing is you can delete any image or recording the camera and microphone sends to Amazon.

This month’s article is not about mobile phone privacy but it’s about Windows 8.1 privacy. It’s interesting to note that as advances are made in technology, especially with consumer items, your personal data is being compromised almost every step of the way. Windows 8.1 doesn’t go as far as the Fire phone but it has some privacy settings that should be reviewed.

To adjust your privacy settings move the mouse pointer to either the extreme upper right of lower right corners. Hold it there until you see the Charms bar pop out from the right side of the screen. Click the gear (Settings) at bottom of the bar, then click Change PC settings at the bottom. Next, click Privacy in the list on the left side of the screen. Under General my recommendation’s settings that all the settings but one should be turned off. The one that should be on is the SmartScreen filter. To change a setting click on gray space opposite the little black bar. If a setting is grayed out it means it cannot be changed. Next, click on Location. All of the settings should be turned off. Click Webcam and turn off all the settings. I know some of you use Skype so you can turn it on when needed. Clicking Microphone you will see Skype again so it needs to be on when using that program

The idea behind Windows 8.1’s Privacy that it too will harvest your personal data if you permit it. Maybe it’s not as bad as the Fire phone but it certainly is crafted along the same lines.

Get answers to your Windows 8.1 questions at the PC Club meetings. We meet on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 7 PM upstairs in the Community Center. We can demonstrate the answers and monthly topics on the projection screen with our computer that runs Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8.1.
